It is no surprise that younger adults drink more alcohol than older adults. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 28% of young adults binge drink compared to 3.8% of older adults. Binge drinking is drinking to get drunk, and is usually classified as five or more drinks in a day. Interestingly though, older adults who binge drink do it more excessively than their young adult counterparts. Each year, excessive use of alcohol ac counts for 21,000 deaths of older adults 65 and older.
The reason to highlight this issue in older adults is that, more people can be more aware that drinking excessively is not only a problem for younger adults. Members of the elderly community are usually more at risk of disease and accidents when they drink. We need to need to encourage ourselves and those around us, especially the elderly, to limit alcohol use.
